Lately it’s been below freezing here in the Bay Area. My wife and I where going through our old clothes and I joked about how we should give these to the homeless guy that lives under the bridge. Then one of us suggested that we should just give him my REI sleeping bag since we will never use it again and it is super warm (to the point that i usually sweat my ass off it it. I think it’s a 20+ bag meaning it will keep you warm at 20 degrees or more).
Every day I walk by this guy, I imagine how cold he must be. How terrible it is that he sleeps under a bridge. I daydream about how much it must suck to be so down in your luck that all you have is a ratty bike some crap you found on the street and a bridge to sleep under. I think about how difficult it must be at night to keep warm… the frost covering your face when you sleep… the pain in your feet as the start to freeze… I can’t stop thinking about it.
This morning I dug out that sleeping bag and walked Coco down to the bridge. I yelled “Hey” and He woke up and looked up at me with a confused look on his face. I said, “I have this sleeping bag for you.” and I tossed it down to him. He slowly moved over and inspected it . Once he realized it was a sleeping bag he looked up at me a waved. I gave him a thumbs up and walked away.
